Harvest Hunts

Our elk herd roams freely on the preserve consisting of approximately 1500 acres of prime elk habitat. The size of the herd is carefully balanced with the carrying capacity of the land to allow the herd and the environment to prosper to their fullest. As each year's calf crop adds members to the elk population a similar number of animals need to be removed through selective harvest hunts. A biologist balances the herd dynamics to maintain a healthy ratio of animals of all age groups. Elk that no longer meet research objectives and aged animals that may winter kill are targeted.

We are able to offer a variety of exciting opportunities to both the novice and experienced hunter alike in a safe, natural environment. We establish our own seasons, management objectives, and only one party is taken at a time. Hunts are scheduled beginning August 15, on a first come first serve basis and require a 50% non-refundable deposit. The terrain is hunter friendly and ATV's are used when needed, particularly for senior and physically disadvantaged participants. This is an excellent opportunity to interact with elk, learn about their habits, and develop or hone hunting skills through a positive and successful experience.

Your hunt will be the way it used to be. Elk of all ages, from the new calf crop to majestic old herd bulls, establish their own herd dynamics. We are careful to ensure the hunting has as little impact on the herd as possible. You will see lots of animals and will not be competing with troops of orange vests. You may harvest an animal or participate in a capture.

Primitive, as well as high powered, weapons are allowed providing the hunter is proficient with the weapon. Rifle hunters should expect shots of 100 yards or less and have their rifles sighted accordingly. Archery hunters should be proficient to 40 yards.

The herd consists of many bulls of all age groups and by mid August they are beginning to battle to establish the pecking order. As the season progresses these battles become increasingly aggressive and often tines are broken during the violent crashes. Hunters wanting an undamaged antler set should book early. A limited number of cow hunts are available early in the season with the bulk of the cow hunts available in November.

Harvest hunts are $850 for cows and begin at $2900 for 4x4 to 6x6 two-year-old bulls. Each year there are a limited number of bulls available in all age groups. We ask for donations of $1000 for each year the bull is past two years of age up to six years old to help us offset the costs associated with maintaining the animals. In addition, a few of the older herd bulls are harvested each year as they become more susceptible to winter kill. Please contact us regarding pricing, availability, and possible tax advantages.
