Research Captures

Captures offer a unique and exciting experience. Each year at some point, it is necessary for us to capture every bull we intend to keep in the herd and remove the yearly antler growth. Many of these bulls are among the largest in North America with an SCI score over 400 points, some above 500.

A successful capture requires a team working together. You and your guide will identify and locate one of the desired bulls. You will call or stalk to within 30 yards and use a tranquilizer gun to shoot the bull with a dart. The bulls are often in the midst of the rutting season and can be found bugling, tearing up the trees, and challenging other bulls.

After approximately ten minutes the bull lies down and the work begins. Your guide may collect hair, blood, or other samples. Pictures of you and your bull are taken. The antlers are removed and a reversal drug injected. It takes about five minutes for the bull to be back on his feet and on his way. The antlers are yours to keep. You may have them mounted using a cape from a taxidermist or arrangements may be made to have them mounted on one of our limited edition bronze heads. Donations given over the value of the antlers are tax deductible. Contributions have varied from $1,000 to $15,000 and are used to help cover operational expenses.
